West Ham weigh up January bid for Weston McKennie as Aston Villa join race
West Ham are weighing up whether to make a move for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie during the January transfer window, according to The Sun.
It is claimed that the Italian giants value the 23-year-old at £25million but are open to loaning him out, as long as there is an obligation to buy him at the end of the deal.
West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur have been actively scouting the USA international who was named Player of the Tournament at the 2021 Gold Cup.
However, the London rivals could face competition from Aston Villa for McKennie, with Dean Smith’s side considering entering the race for his signature.
It is suggested that the limited funds on offer at the London Stadium could see Villa usurp the Irons in pursuit of the American.
More trouble than he’s worth?
McKennie has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently.
In September, he was sent home by USA national team manager Gregg Berhalter for violating the team’s coronavirus protocols on two separate occasions [ESPN].
That follows his April suspension by then-Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo after the American hosted a party in breach of COVID regulations [ESPN].
He is developing a reputation off the field, but he has shown sparks of real talent on it.
McKennie scored six goals in 45 appearances during his first season with the Old Lady after joining from Schalke, including a Champions League strike against Barcelona.
He has made four Serie A starts under Massimiliano Allegri this season but appears to be surplus to requirements in the long run.
Would David Moyes be prepared to take a slight risk on a prodigious talent such as McKennie? Quite possibly, as he has shown that he can get players on the straight and narrow and get them to produce their best football. Just ask Jesse Lingard, who overcame personal issues to star on loan last season.
But McKennie may prove to be a little to rich for their blood.
In other West Ham news, Bianca Westwood is stunned by David Moyes’ transfer admission on this prolific striker.
