West Ham want to terminate player contract after what’s happened – Alex Crook

West Ham United are still hoping to terminate the loan contract of Maxwel Cornet after an underwhelming spell at Southampton, according to Alex Crook.

The talkSPORT journalist reported via the Transfer Notebook on Monday (30 December) that the Hammers want to cut short the forward’s spell on the South Coast and sanction a permanent sale in January.

Cornet has managed only 71 minutes of Premier League action since joining the Saints in August and, amid previous reports mooting a January return to East London, it appears Julen Lopetegui will aim to use the money recouped from his sale to help fund the Irons’ January transfer activity.

West Ham United want to sell Maxwel Cornet

Despite making only two Premier League appearances for bottom-of-the-table Southampton this term, West Ham may be on to something by recalling Cornet.

The 28-year-old is attracting interest ahead of the January transfer window, with Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers showing a desire to acquire his signature permanently [225foot].

Watford are also in the running but would prefer a loan deal until the end of the season and, given Cornet’s stock is showing no signs of rising, he will be sold.

West Ham supporters can be forgiven for forgetting the Ivorian remains on the wage bill in East London – he only managed 16 outings under David Moyes last term and left nothing worth of note on the pitch.

He will undoubtedly join the long list of transfer failings at the London Stadium – the Irons parted ways with £17.5million to pry Cornet from Burnley [BBC Sport] and will be lucky to receive even a fraction of the outlay.

Regardless, it makes perfect sense for the Hammers to cut their losses now rather than wait until the season ends when they could find themselves with no potential suitors.
