West Ham want to sign Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen

West Ham are among the frontrunners to sign Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen, according to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari.

The SportItalia reporter made the claim on his verified personal Twitter profile on Wednesday night [30/06/21].

He wrote: “There is interest in the Roma goalkeeper Olsen after his excellent European Championship with Sweden. Among the most active teams are West Ham, Lille and Real Sociedad.”

Smart back-up

Olsen spent last season on loan at our Premier League rivals Everton, providing competition for England number one Jordan Pickford.

He made seven Premier League appearances and was on the bench for both games with West Ham last season, including May’s 1-0 win at the London Stadium.

He was viewed as a reliable deputy to Pickford, but it was at Euro 2020 where he really shone.

The 31-year-old was labelled a “monster” by prominent Spanish newspaper Marca [via Svenska Dagbladet] on June 14 after shutting out the Spain attack in a 0-0 draw.

That was one of two clean sheets under his belt in the group stages as Sweden advanced into the knock-out rounds as winners.

However, he suffered a blow on Tuesday night [29/06/21] as Ukraine struck a last-minute winner in extra time to send 10-man Sweden out in the round of 16 stage.

West Ham

Lukasz Fabianski is firmly entrenched as the Irons number one, but it appears David Moyes is keen to sign more competition for the Poland international, despite the presence of Darren Randolph and David Martin at the club.

The latter will likely only be used in case of emergencies and will focus on his coaching duties, and European football will require Moyes to make some reinforcements to cover himself.

Olsen knows the Premier League, and has impressed on the European stage, so it could be a smart pick-up by the Irons.
