West Ham want to sign Djordje Petrovic after deal agreed elsewhere

West Ham are reportedly in the hunt to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic in the summer transfer window.

Lukasz Fabianski has played his last game for the London Stadium outfit, while Alphonse Areola has been far from convincing between the sticks.

Signing Petrovic would see the Hammers installing a new number one ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Caoimhin Kelleher’s move to Brentford sees Petrovic targeted

According to the Daily Mail (6 June), Caoimhin Kelleher was understood to be on the radar of West Ham this summer.

Once it was clear that he would be leaving Liverpool in order to gain regular first-team minutes, the Irons made their interest known.

However, the Republic of Ireland international joined Brentford, forcing his suitors to look at other alternatives.

Graham Potter wants a new keeper amid Areola’s struggles and Petrovic has emerged as an option.

The Serbian was highly rated by Mauricio Pochettino during his time at Stamford Bridge as well.

He said: “The goalkeeper came from MLS and is doing fantastic, he is growing and discovering feelings in the toughest competition.”

West Ham can benefit from signing Petrovic this summer

Petrovic would be an excellent signing for West Ham, bringing quality and competition to their goalkeeping department.

The 25-year-old Serbian has proven his worth during a stellar loan spell at Strasbourg in 2024-25, earning their Player of the Season award with 10 clean sheets in 31 Ligue 1 matches.

His composure, shot-stopping ability and confidence in high-pressure situations make him a reliable option.

With Fabianski’s departure and Areola as the current first-choice, Petrovic’s 23 Premier League appearances for Chelsea under Pochettino demonstrate his readiness to compete for the number-one spot.

His ability to instil confidence in defenders aligns with Potter’s vision for a cohesive, attacking unit.

At 25, Petrovic offers long-term potential, fitting Potter’s preference for younger players with resale value.

His valuation suggests a feasible deal, possibly involving a swap with Mohammed Kudus, addressing West Ham’s need for a high-calibre goalkeeper to push for European qualification.

Petrovic’s signing could elevate West Ham’s defensive stability and ambition.
