West Ham United: Wilfried Gnonto ‘trying to leave’ Leeds United in January

Wilfried Gnonto is “trying to leave” Leeds United in the January transfer window amid interest from West Ham, according to Matteo Moretto.

Writing in a daily Substack update (19 January), the reliable journalist reports that the Italy international wants to leave Elland Road and that there are several clubs interested in his signature.

Reports suggest that the Hammers are “expected” to sign Gnonto before the February 1st deadline, and it seems as though the player is doing his bit in getting a deal over the line.

“Leeds United winger and Italy international Wilfred Gnonto has been linked with a move to West Ham of late, and he seems to be a candidate to move in January,” he wrote.

“He wants to leave Leeds United, and there are teams interested. He was linked with a move in the summer, and tried to leave then, and he is trying to leave again during this transfer window.”

Movement

West Ham are very much active in this transfer window and are keen on bringing in a new attacker to bolster their current options.

David Moyes knows that there is no long-term future at the club for the likes of Michail Antonio, Danny Ings, Said Benrahma, Maxwel Cornet and Pablo Fornals and with Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta all currently unavailable that means reinforcements are needed.

West Ham

The club have already made moves for Arsenal pair Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe which have failed, so it could be that the team are looking at alternative options before pulling the trigger on Gnonto.

Leeds had never previously been open to a sale of the Italy international but he hasn’t played nearly as regularly this season as was expected in the summer, so it could be the right thing for them to do now to cash in before his stock drops even more.
