West Ham United want to sign Jonathan David from Lille, £42.5m deal mooted
West Ham are ‘particularly likely’ to arrive with a big check for Lille as they look to sign striker Jonathan David in a £42.5m deal, according to But FC.
The Hammers are in the market for a striker during this January transfer window, as David Moyes looks for competition for Michail Antonio to boost their chances of success in coming seasons.
David has been linked with a move away after a great start to the season with all of Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Inter Milan all linked with a move for the 21-year-old.
However with just one goal since the turn of the year, their interest is said to have cooled and West Ham are now looking to compete with Aston Villa for the Canadian international’s signature.
But David is expected to wait for a bigger project, with AC Milan mooted as a potential destination, and with Lille demanding €50m (£42.5m) for his signature they believe he could be set to stay at the club this summer.
Moyes wants a very specific type of striker and while David suits the mould stylistically, his goal record isn’t the greatest to justify that type of fee.
There is plenty of room for potential growth and the manager is someone who loves to coach players and develop them into his vision.
There is clearly a lot of quality to his game, as mentioned by Alphonso Davies in the past, and he would be a perfect foil for Antonio and would learn plenty from him, but they need someone who is ready to step in and provide competition immediately.
For a fee of over £40m you would expect a more polished forward than what David is currently, so unless the fee drops considerably this would seem like a strange deal to pursue.
But a striker is undoubtedly needed, so it’s encouraging to see the club have clearly got their scouts out searching for the right fit for the club.
