West Ham United want to sign ex-Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes from Lille

West Ham United want to sign Lille starlet Angel Gomes this summer after watching him for several months, according to The Boot Room.

Writing on their website (14 May), the news outlet report that the former Manchester United academy graduate is a target for a number of clubs in the Premier League and across Europe after his excellent form in Ligue 1 this season.

The 23-year-old has registered eight assists this season, more than anyone else at the club, and while the French club look to tie him down to a new deal the interest in the playmaker could make it difficult for them to hold on to him this summer.

West Ham United can add attacking quality with Gomes signing

While in the Manchester United academy, Gomes was one of the stars to break into the first-team, becoming the youngest first-team player since Duncan Edwards in 1953.

But he left on a free transfer amid concerns about first-team football and headed to France, where he has become a hugely important figure in the team that is one win away from Champions League football next season.

With Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals already leaving the club and the futures of Maxwel Cornet, Danny Ings, Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta all up in the air attacking reinforcements are needed.

It’s unlikely that Gomes would cost an arm and a leg, and with experience of the English game it wouldn’t take him too long to adapt either.

But if he is wanted by Julen Lopetegui then the club must move quickly to get a deal done considering the competition for his signature, so it will be interesting to see how this progresses.
