West Ham United want to sign Aaron Hickey amid Aaron Cresswell development at London Stadium

West Ham are considering a move to sign Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey this summer, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported on their website on 8 June that David Moyes wants a new left-back ahead of the 2022/23 season and is keen to sign a replacement for Aaron Cresswell.

Rangers and Bournemouth are reportedly keen on young left-back Emmanuel Longelo with it seeming as though this summer could be a big one in that area of the squad for the Hammers.

All change at left-back

Hickey is a 19-year-old Scotland international who’s had a stunning 2021/22 season with Bologna in Serie A.

The former Hearts ace scored five goals and supplied one assist in 36 league appearances for the Italian outfit, playing mainly as a left-sided wing-back.

Hickey can also play on the right-hand side of the pitch and can drop back into a more reserved role. However, he is known as a marauding, attack-minded full-back who loves to bomb forward.

As quoted by the Sunday Post on 20 March, Scotland manager Steve Clarke waxed lyrical about Hickey.

He said: “Aaron is a player I don’t know very well. But he has done fantastic out in Italy, and I hear a lot of good stories about him.

“Austin McPhee worked with him at Hearts, and has lots of positives to say about the boy. He is quite versatile, can play off the left and off the right and I believe he can play central midfield.”

As Cresswell is ageing and is still prone to inconsistency, it might be a good idea for the Irons to board the hype train with Scottish full-backs right now.

It’ll cost the Hammers a fair bit.

The Edinburgh Post reported on 18 May that Hickey is valued at £13million and that he’s also being eyed up by Arsenal, Brentford, Newcastle and Napoli.

A deal will be tough but with Moyes in charge at the London Stadium, surely having a Scottish manager will count for something?

In other West Ham news, a deal is on the cards to sign a forward who Moyes once compared to Wayne Rooney.
