West Ham United want Logan Costa as £17m update emerges

West Ham must spend at least £17million to sign Toulouse defender Logan Costa, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian source reported [3 August] that the Hammers see the 23-year-old as an alternative signing to Jean-Clair Todibo, but face competition from Bologna, who would only need to pay £12.8million.

It is understood that the London club are still interested in signing Nice’s central defender, Todibo, as per Gazzetta dello Sport [31 July], but the player’s heart is still set on a move to Juventus.

West Ham United target Logan Costa as Jean-Clair Todibo alternative

A potential move for Todibo already looks dead in the water, even with almost an entire month until the summer transfer window closes.

Julen Lopetegui clearly sees the defence as an area that needs vast improvement ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, with £40million already splashed on Wolves’ captain Max Kilman [BBC Sport].

While Costa has far less experience than Todibo, his addition could be extremely important for the Hammers, especially if Nayef Aguerd is to leave this summer.

The 23-year-old has become a key part of the Toulouse squad, making 29 Ligue 1 starts last season, seeing him rack up 57 senior appearances since 2021.

He also has experience with Reims in the French League before earning a move to Toulouse and has cemented a regular spot in the Cape Verde national team over the past two seasons.

David Moyes’ defensive approach was slaughtered last season, with Kurt Zouma, Aguerd and Konstantinos Mavropanos highlighted as West Ham only conceded fewer goals than Sheffield United.

If Lopetegui is to rebuild the squad at the London Stadium, the defence looks to be the best place to start, with several centre-back options being targeted.
