West Ham United want January deal to sign ‘excellent’ Dan-Axel Zagadou

West Ham are looking to sign Stuttgart defender Dan-Axel Zagadou in the January transfer window, according to Simon Jones in the Daily Mail.

The journalist shared in his transfer window guide [31 December] that Zagadou is among several players drawing interest from David Moyes’ side ahead of the January window.

After Konstantinos Mavropanos arrived from the German outfit in the summer, West Ham are now keen on bringing in his former partner as they look to strengthen their defensive options.

Strength in depth is key

With Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma the apparent first-choice duo at the London Stadium, and with Mavropanos playing backup, a deal for Zagadou would see the Hammers further strengthen the depth in that area.

Angelo Ogbonna has been called upon on several occasions this season due to injuries and other issues, and while he has not been bad, the 35-year-old cannot be somebody Moyes has to rely on if West Ham want to challenge for silverware this season.

Former Dortmund boss Marco Rose managed Zagadou during their spell at BVB and described him as “excellent” during an interview with BVB Buzz in 2021, six months before he left to join Stuttgart, showing how highly thought of the Frenchman is.

Standing at 6ft5, Zagadou would also be an aerial threat from set-pieces – something Moyes looks for when recruiting as a key part of his style of play which has resulted in plenty of success so far this season. His 16 Bundesliga appearances this season have been enough to catch the eye of the Hammers boss.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are ready to let one ace leave in January.
