West Ham United want deadline-busting deal to sign Fulham right-back Kevin Mbabu

West Ham United are in the hunt to sign Fulham right-back Kevin Mbabu as the clock ticks closer to the January transfer window closing, according to Dean Jones.

Writing on the GiveMeSport website on 29 January, the former Bleacher Report and Eurosport journalist reported that the Irons are keen on signing a new right-back before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday (31 January).

It is understood that Tottenham’s Djed Spence and Aston Villa’s Calum Chambers are also “under consideration” at the London Stadium as David Moyes seeks a late addition to his underperforming side.

West Ham

Extra depth

If West Ham were to sign Mbabu, he wouldn’t be someone we’d expect to break into West Ham’s starting line-up.

The former Newcastle right-back only joined Fulham from Wolfsburg in July 2022 but has since played just seven times in all competitions for the West London outfit.

He’s started just one game in the Premier League so if he’s not good enough to start for the Cottagers – he’s not good enough to start for us.

But that doesn’t mean we should turn our noses up at signing the 22-times Switzerland international.

Mbabu would provide Moyes with an extra layer of depth in the right-back area.

West Ham

Craig Dawson has spent a lot of his career playing at right-back so he was an option there for us before he left earlier this month to join Wolves.

Moyes was left with just Ben Johnson and Vladimir Coufal as right-back options.

Johnson, 23, has struggled this season while 30-year-old Coufal has had his own difficulties, has been linked with a move away from the London Stadium and is out of contract in the summer.

West Ham need a better starting right-back than Mbabu but he’s not a terrible back-up option.
