West Ham United update as Steven Bergwijn now offered by Ajax for January transfer

West Ham have been offered the chance to sign Steven Bergwijn from Ajax in the January transfer window, according to HITC.

The online news outlet reported on its website on Monday (8 January) that sources have indicated the Dutch international has indicated his openness to returning to England following his previous stint with the Hammers’ London rivals Tottenham.

It added that the 26-year-old winger is understood to be a player the Irons like, with fellow Premier League clubs Crystal Palace, Brentford, Fulham, Wolves and Everton also interested in signing him.

This could be just the kind of signing West Ham should be looking to make as they aim to improve their forward options during the January transfer window.

While Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus offer pace and directness coming in off the right, Bergwijn can play on either flank and has the potential to add an extra threat to an already dangerous attack, which includes the skilful Lucas Paqueta.

The Ajax captain had an impressive first half of the season despite his side’s struggles in the Eredivisie, having registered eight goals and three assists in 20 appearances in all competitions.

The Dutchman also has experience in the Premier League following his time with Spurs, where he didn’t have as much impact as he would have hoped after failing to nail down a regular starting spot.

But the winger could provide the added depth we need offensively as we look to challenge for a European place again in the second half of the season.
