West Ham United transfer update on Piero Hincapie emerges before deadline day
Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie looks set to remain in Germany after Liverpool decided not to move, although West Ham were the “most genuine” suitors, according to Ben Jacobs.
The CBS journalist shared via his personal Twitter account that Hincapie would have welcomed an approach from Liverpool, but it never arrived, while West Ham also never made an official move for his services.
A previous report from Fussball Transfers [17 August] claimed that West Ham had been in contact with the defender since the winter, with technical director Tim Steidten a big fan of his.
Other positions are a priority
West Ham’s interest in Hincapie seemed to cool as their move for another Bundesliga defender intensified, eventually leading to the Hammers opting to sign Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos instead, as they aimed to strengthen their depth at the back this summer.
Hincapie would have been a fantastic edition at the London Stadium, as he is held in high regard throughout Europe. The 21-year-old would have come at a premium, as the demand for high-quality left-footed defenders remains high, and his signing would have been a brilliant coup for West Ham.
Now though, other positions have become the priority in East London, with the Hammers in desperate need of reinforcements up front before the transfer deadline on 1 September, having sold Gianluca Scamacca to Atalanta earlier in the window.

Ultimately, they opted to go for Mavropanos for defensive cover, and will now turn their attentions away from Hincapie to focus on bringing David Moyes the striker he has been after throughout the summer transfer window to provide further depth to his squad.
In other West Ham news, the club have reached hot hours in their pursuit of a new midfielder.
