West Ham United transfer twist as ‘significant’ Jonathan David update shared
West Ham United will only make a “significant” U-turn to sign Jonathan David if they are unable to secure an alternative centre-forward, according to GiveMeSport.
The online source reported [15 July] that Tim Steidten is hesitant about pushing for the Lille forward this summer, worried he will not be successful in the Premier League.
It is understood that Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran has been pin-pointed as the primary target for the Hammers, and only if obstacles cannot be overcome for the signing will David then be considered.
West Ham United to avoid Jonathan David signing as Jhon Duran targeted
While Steidten is in control of the club’s transfer targets and has already added Luis Guilherme, Max Kilman and Wes Foderingham, it seems foolish to rule out a move for David already.
The Canadian forward, who was dubbed a “cold man” by international team-mate Stephen Eustaquio for his finishing ability, has scored 43 Ligue 1 goals over the last two seasons, ending the 2023/24 campaign with 19 goals and four assists.
Only Kylian Mbappe scored more goals in the French league last term, with former Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette notching the same number as David.
He now has 84 goals in 183 matches for Lille, also boasting 28 goals in 54 appearances for Canada on the international stage.
While Duran is showing promise at Villa Park, playing an understudy role behind Ollie Watkins, David seems to be a much more intelligent buy as the Canadian enters the last 12 months of his contract.
Michail Antonio’s recent injury record suggests that a new striker is a must for Julen Lopetegui this summer, with AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham and Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri also being linked with moves to the London Stadium.

It will certainly be interesting to see which striker the Hammers decide to sign, with reports suggesting that the club want to add a new forward before the end of July [GiveMeSport].
In other West Ham news, the Hammers may vary their training routines as they have made an approach to sign a £70m-rated player this summer.
