West Ham United transfer news as update shared on Wes Foderingham pursuit

West Ham United have so far been unsuccessful in their attempt to agree a deal with departing Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, according to Alan Nixon.

The journalist shared via The Sunday Sun [26 May, page 57] that West Ham are “struggling” in their pursuit of the 33-year-old, who is leaving Bramall Lane following the Blades’ Premier League relegation.

That would be an early blow to new United boss Julen Lopetegui’s transfer plans, with a new goalkeeper said to be on his list of transfer targets with the summer window soon to open.

Is Wes Foderingham a good option for West Ham United?

On the face of it, signing a goalkeeper who featured 30 times for the team with the worst defensive record in Premier League history seems a strange one.

Foderingham is also not exactly young, while the Irons already have Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski on their books – two well-established goalkeepers.

However, there have been questions over Fabianski’s future at London Stadium, which means signing a new back-up to Areola makes sense on the face of it.

What Foderingham has going in his favour is that he is a free agent who has Premier League experience. Assuming Areola is number one under Lopetegui, a player of Foderingham’s profile would therefore suit.

Alan Nixon, The Sun

United do not want to be spending £10million-plus of their transfer budget on someone who will only likely play a handful of games in 2024-25.

It would hardly be a signing to get the pulses racing should an agreement be reached, but nor does it have to be. It would simply be a smart piece of business to get the ball rolling.

In other West Ham news, a £25m update has been shared on a player the Hammers have been tracking.
