Sheffield Wednesday join Charlton Athletic in race to sign Conor Coventry, West Ham United stance shared

Sheffield Wednesday and at least one unnamed team abroad are the latest to show an interest in West Ham midfielder Conor Coventry, according to The Star.

The Sheffield-centric publication shared the update on its website on Friday (5 January), while adding that West Ham are open to letting Coventry leave this month.

Wednesday are not alone in wanting to sign the former Republic of Ireland Under-21s international, however, as Charlton Athletic are also readying an offer [Richard Cawley, 5 January].

The Star report adds that other sides in the Championship and abroad could be in for Coventry, meaning the Owls are not currently considered the frontrunners for his signature.

Decision time

Coventry has not had much of a look-in at London Stadium, but there is clearly something about him if he is generating this type of interest from clubs at home and abroad.

The midfielder always caught the eye in the academy ranks and has long been considered a future gem for the Hammers, but he will turn 24 in March and needs regular minutes.

Coventry has already spent time on loan at Lincoln City, Peterborough United, MK Dons and Rotherham United over the past few years, so he has experience in the Football League.

West Ham

David Moyes clearly does not fancy Coventry as he has has yet to be given any minutes across all competitions this season, although he is expected to start the FA Cup third-round tie with Bristol City this weekend.

Given he is out of contract in the summer, United must decide now whether to offer him another deal before possibly loaning him out, or cashing in for a minimal fee this month.

Either way, it will be nice for Coventry to have some clarity on his future at an age he should be playing week in, week out.
