Fabrizio Romano: David Sullivan at work behind the scenes at West Ham United after heavy defeat v Fulham

West Ham chiefs are already hard at work looking to strengthen the squad ahead of the January transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Irons are reeling from Sunday’s (10 December) 5-0 Premier League loss at Fulham that brought a crashing halt to their recent momentum.

With the transfer window reopening in a few weeks’ time, reinforcements may be incoming at London Stadium.

West Ham

“I expect West Ham to be busy in January as they’re looking at opportunities around, though it’s still too early to say anything about specific names,” Romano said in his Daily Briefing column [11 December].

“Nothing is advanced, but the owners and directors are working on it.”

Positive update

This development can only be considered a positive as it has long been unknown exactly how much money will be freed up by the Hammers board.

Given the large outlay in the summer, albeit offset by Declan Rice’s £105million switch to Arsenal, it looked likely the purse strings would be tightened.

If Romano’s update is anything to go by, though, then it is likely a player or two will be coming to London Stadium over the next month or so.

West Ham

A new out-and-out striker must surely be at the top of David Moyes’ wishlist, helping to take the strain off makeshift centre-forward Jarrod Bowen.

Other positions could do with strengthening, but the January window is notoriously difficult to get deals over the line.

United look set to have plenty to play for in the second half of the season, so let’s hope Moyes – assuming he is still in charge – is given financial backing.

In other West Ham news, Tony Gale witnessed something he had never previously seen a player do in West Ham’s loss at Fulham.
