West Ham United transfer news: Brazil scouting plans emerge as David Moyes makes decision

David Moyes and his recruitment team at West Ham rejected the chance to sign Benfica forward Marcos Leonardo, according to the Athletic.

The news outlet reported on 29 February that in January, when the Brazilian striker was at Santos, he was offered to the Hammers on loan.

However, the fact that he was only 20 worked against him and he ended up moving to Portugal instead and now the Hammers want to be scouting up and coming talent in Brazil.

Transfer blunder by West Ham United

Signing Leonardo on loan could have been a strategic move for West Ham, considering their recent struggles in the attacking department.

With Michail Antonio sidelined until very recently due to injury, the Hammers lacked depth and dynamism up front.

Danny Ings, while a talented striker, hadn’t yet found his rhythm with the team.

Additionally, the absence of Lucas Paqueta left a significant creative void in the frontline.

Given these circumstances, bringing in a young and promising forward like Leonardo on loan could have provided a much-needed injection of energy and unpredictability to their attacking play.

While his age might have initially raised concerns, his track record at Santos and early success at Benfica showcased his potential to make an impact at the top level.

Opting for a loan deal would have allowed the Hammers to assess his suitability for the Premier League without a long-term commitment, making it a reasonable risk worth considering.
