West Ham hold an interest in Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay according to Sky Sports but are yet to make a formal offer for the Scotsman.

The 26-year-old has two years left on his current contract at Old Trafford with the option to extend it for a further year, but Sky report that any decision over his future will be down to the player.

David Moyes and West Ham are looking to strengthen their midfield after the £105m sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal last week and both the club and manager are fond of the Scotland international.

Reporting on 17 July on their transfer centre live blog [09:15], they wrote: “West Ham are interested in Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. United have yet to receive any official bids. 

“The final decision over McTominay’s will rest with the player – he has two years left on his contract with the option of a further year.”

Suits all parties

It’s no secret how crucial Rice was to West Ham’s success since he debuted in 2017, he quickly became an ever-present and there’s no doubt the Hammers need to recruit quickly to fill the void left at the Olympic Stadium.

While McTominay isn’t quite the £100m player that Rice is, he has a wealth of Premier League, European and international experience that cannot be undervalued.

Having played at the European Championships and in the Champions League, alongside some of the best players the Premier League has to offer at Old Trafford in over 200 appearances, he would provide some maturity beyond his years.

For McTominay it offers him the opportunity to gain consistent minutes, something not afforded to him since Erik ten Hag took over at United.

Moyes has a knack for helping midfielders maximise their talent, whether that be Rice, Tomas Soucek or even Marouane Fellaini and if he can have the same effect on McTominy, it will help fill the Rice-shaped hole in East London.
