West Ham United transfer news as Mateo Retegui approach made

West Ham United have made a personal approach to sign Tigres loanee Mateo Retegui as they continue their search for a consistent goalscorer, according to Sitio Andino.

The 23-year-old burst onto the Italian international scene with goals against Gareth Southgate’s England side and Malta in the most recent break from domestic action.

The Boca Juniors forward has been in scintillating form while on loan at Tigres, netting 29 goals from 51 appearances during his time with the Argentinian side.

Gazzetta recently reported (28 March) that Italian sides AC Milan and Lazio were also lying up a move for the striker forward in the summer transfer window.

“West Ham is the other club that approached the Italian nationalized Argentine,” Sitio Andino wrote.

“Those from London seek to stay in the First Division and need goals. Precisely, their centre forward is Gianluca Scamacca, the one who was a substitute for Retegui in the Nazionale.”

Summer revamp

After spending over £160million last summer, not many would have predicted West Ham United would already be planning fresh transfer business, especially for a forward.

However, considering Gianluca Scamacca’s struggles in the capital, and the fact that Danny Ings isn’t getting any younger at 30 years old, David Moyes’ side are right to consider a player of Retegui’s calibre.

The Argentina-born striker has been in excellent form in South America, and Boca Juniors now look ready to start a transfer auction for his services in the summer transfer window.

Whether Retegui could make the step up to the Premier League is still questionable, but considering he has scored twice in two appearances for the Italy national team, he looks like a talent who is too good to miss out on.

It would be no surprise to see a striker on Moyes’ summer shopping list, and Retegui fits the bill for an ideal replacement if Scamacca ends up leaving the club at the end of the season.
