West Ham United transfer news as Harry Maguire twist emerges

West Ham are set to look elsewhere in their pursuit of a new centre-back after Manchester United rebuffed their first approach for Harry Maguire, who would be unhappy with the move, according to Football Transfers.

The online outlet has reported on its website [7 August] that Maguire is looking to join a bigger club than West Ham this summer if he is to leave Manchester United, throwing a potential transfer into doubt.

It is shared that West Ham are not willing to pay the £40million asking price for the defender and are becoming frustrated at the inflated prices they are being quoted, while David Moyes has been pushing for the deal to happen.

Give it up

If Maguire doesn’t want to play for West Ham, despite them offering European football and likely a starring role in their squad, then the Hammers need to give up on the deal in search of someone who actually wants to represent their club.

Maguire’s insistence on playing for a “bigger club” this season is likely to hamper his move, with the Hammers’ offer of Europa League football the best he seems likely to get as other interest is reportedly coming from Everton who narrowly avoided relegation last time out.

West Ham have been linked with deals for Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah and Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, who they may now focus their attention on after news of Maguire’s stance.

West Ham

The Hammers are targeting improvements in all areas this summer, after losing Declan Rice to Arsenal, rather than forking out on a major replacement for him. They are still yet to complete a deal in this transfer window but have recently agreed terms with Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez [Fabrizio Romano, 7 August].

In other West Ham news, the club could approach Chelsea for a new transfer deal.
