West Ham United transfer news as Flynn Downes makes permanent Southampton admission
West Ham loanee Flynn Downes has admitted that he would “love” to extend his stay with Southampton after a successful season at St Mary’s Stadium.
The 25-year-old midfielder joined the Championship side on a season-long loan last summer and has become an integral part of Russell Martin’s squad, having made 35 appearances in all competitions.
According to The Standard [8 May], Downes is set to be given a chance to prove himself at the London Stadium this summer as Julen Lopetegui looks set to replace David Moyes as manager.
Speaking to the Daily Echo on Monday (13 May), he reflected on his future, saying: “Of course, I would love to stay here next season. I love it here.
“I love the gaffer. I love the staff. I love this place. Obviously, we will have to see what happens. I won’t know too much until I go back to West Ham. We will see what happens there.”
Will Flynn Downes switch West Ham United for Southampton this summer?
While Downes could be given an opportunity to cement his spot in the Hammers team ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, it seems he may have already made a decision on his future.
The midfielder has been shown an incredible amount of appreciation from his loan club this season, having become a key player as Southampton look to secure promotion back to the Premier League.
The Saints have the chance to gain promotion straight out of the Championship after facing relegation last season, hoping to pip West Brom, Leeds United and Norwich City.
This could see Downes play in the Premier League next season either way. West Ham no longer have European football to sway the young player’s decision, which could be key.
Despite making 35 appearances for the Irons during his debut season in London, it seemed like a simple decision to ship the midfielder out on loan last summer, a move which has worked wonders for him.
