West Ham United transfer news as Alvaro Fernandez proposals mad

West Ham made proposals to sign Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez in the summer transfer window before the player sealed a loan move to Granada, according to Ideal.

The Spanish news outlet shared on 4 September that West Ham, Burnley, Las Palmas and Espanyol made moves to sign the Spaniard, but a loan move to Granada was the preferred option.

It was also reported that Manchester United valued Fernandez at around £6million, making a permanent transfer move a possibility for either of the interested Premier League sides.

West Ham may have pulled out of a potential move

It was reported throughout the summer that West Ham were keen on bringing in younger full-backs to replace their ageing options in a long-term move. Links with Fernandez emerged in The Mirror, who shared that the Hammers had been keeping tabs on the youngster [23 August].

The Ideal article does not share whether or not the proposals made by the East London side were focused on a loan deal or permanent transfer, but the aforementioned price tag and long-term view suggest a permanent deal would have been the preferred option.

Fernandez spent last season on loan at Preston North End in the Championship and was another player at Old Trafford after Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay who interested the Irons.

The report also suggests that Fernandez wanted to leave the option open to return to Manchester United next season, meaning a move to East London may not have been in his best interest to begin with.

Ultimately, Aaron Cresswell’s decision to remain at the London Stadium despite interest from elsewhere appears to be the reason West Ham didn’t make a move for a younger full-back late in the window.

In other West Ham news, one player has been offered a £160k+ per week deal to quit the Hammers this week.
