West Ham United transfer news as £30m development emerges in Jake O’Brien chase

Alan Nixon has claimed that West Ham United are unlikely to pursue a £30million deal for Republic of Ireland centre-half Jake O’Brien from Lyon.

Writing for The Sun on Sunday (7 July, page 57) the journalist suggested that despite needing defensive reinforcements after Angelo Ogbonna’s departure and ongoing uncertainty around Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd, the Hammers are hesitant to meet Lyon’s asking price.

Everton and Nottingham Forest are also in the race for O’Brien, with the Toffees particularly hopeful of securing the 23-year-old’s signature – although for a far lower fee.

Nixon wrote: “Everton are clinging to hopes of winning the race for Republic of Ireland centre-half Jake O’Brien. The Toffees think Lyon defender O’Brien, 23, would choose them ahead of Nottingham Forest and West Ham.

“Everton rate O’Brien in the £20million bracket but the French side wants around £30million – which the Hammers are not prepared to pay. If Sean Dyche lands him then Michael Keane could leave several clubs I have been alerted to his availability.”

How likely is Jake O’Brien to join West Ham?

O’Brien joining West Ham could be a realistic possibility given their current defensive needs and ongoing talks with Lyon.

With Ogbonna leaving, and question marks over others, there’s a clear gap in defence that O’Brien could potentially fill – even if Max Kilman has now arrived.

However, the Hammers’ hesitation to meet Lyon’s asking price presents an obstacle, especially with competition from Everton and Nottingham Forest also in the mix.

O’Brien would fit well into West Ham’s plans to strengthen their squad for a European push.

If negotiations progress smoothly and a deal can be struck that satisfies Lyon’s demands, O’Brien may well find himself at the London Stadium next season, providing Julen Lopetegui’s side with another promising addition to their defensive lineup.
