West Ham United transfer development emerges to sign new defender
West Ham and Tim Steidten are working hard to secure the signing of a new defender after the announcement of Niclas Fullkrug, according to Graeme Bailey.
The HITC journalist claimed on 5 August that work is not yet done at the London Stadium in this transfer window.
The Hammers have already sealed the signings of Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Guilherme and Wes Fodderingham this summer.
Via X, Bailey wrote: “Big signing for West Ham as they land German star Niclas Fullkrug. Follows on from Crysencio Summerville and will be followed by Guido Rodriguez. Tim Steidten doing well but working hard to re-stock the defence too.”
West Ham need to bring in a new defender
The club’s decision to prioritise signing a new defender after the acquisition of Fullkrug is a prudent move, given the team’s defensive vulnerabilities last season.
Despite finishing in a respectable ninth place, the Hammers conceded a significant number of goals, highlighting the need for reinforcements in the back line.
The addition of a new defender, alongside the already secured Kilman, demonstrates the club’s commitment to strengthening the squad and addressing the weaknesses that plagued them last season.
It remains to be seen whether or not another centre-back joins as both Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd have been linked with an exit.
Both defenders were included in offers to sign Jean-Clair Todibo [Foot Mercato, 5 July], which shows that they’re not too high in the pecking order.
There is a need to strengthen in the full-back positions as well so hopefully, Steidten has suitable targets lined up.
In other West Ham news, Arsenal and Newcastle have made late moves to hijack Spurs’ deal to secure the services of a Hammers player this summer.
