West Ham United transfer decision emerges as Wilfried Zaha ‘U-turn’ made

Wilfried Zaha has reversed his decision to join West Ham from Galatasaray this summer, according to Sabah Spor.

The Turkish website reported [12 June] that the 31-year-old was considering a move away from Galatasaray but has now decided to cut contact with the Hammers, making a “U-turn” on his original decision.

It is understood that the Irons have been long-time admirers of the former Crystal Palace attacker, with Zaha notching 10 goals in 42 appearances since moving on a free transfer last summer.

West Ham United miss out on Wilfried Zaha transfer

Considering the 31-year-old’s previous experience in the Premier League, he could be a decent fit at the London Stadium as Julen Lopetegui begins to rebuild after David Moyes’ exit.

Zaha notched 90 goals and 62 assists in 458 appearances across multiple spells at Selhurst Park, with his last spell with the Eagles lasting eight years.

Despite naturally being a winger, the Ivory Coast international has the ability to play as a striker, which could have been what sealed his move to West Ham.

With Michael Antonio the only real striker option currently at Lopetegui’s disposal, and Danny Ings a subpar backup option, Zaha could have slotted right into the forward line.

The attacking trio of Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta are very fluid for the Irons, which would have suited Zaha, who is used to playing on the counterattack and deputising in different positions.

However, those hopes now seem to be foiled after the player made the decision to stay with Galatasaray and continue to play in the Turkish Super Lig.

West Ham

Given that West Ham are nearing a deal to sign 18-year-old Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras this summer, the club look to be going down the youth route under Lopetegui’s guidance.

This would suggest that with Zaha at 31 years of age now, the Hammers will begin their search for a young set of transfer targets.
