West Ham United told to make Konstantinos Mavropanos transfer call after exit update
Tom Rennie has told West Ham United it would be a “good decision” to sell Konstantinos Mavropanos, labelling him “an accident waiting to happen”.
The Hammers are reportedly willing to let the Greek international exit the London Stadium before the transfer window closes at the end of August if their valuation is met by any interested club [Sean Whetstone, 13 August].
Mavropanos only arrived in East London from Stuttgart last season, but talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie already feels as though he has seen enough of the defender in a claret and blue shirt.
Writing on X on Tuesday (13 August) he said: “This would be a good decision.
“An accident waiting to happen in every game.”
Will Konstantinos Mavropanos exit West Ham United amid transfer rumours?
Mavropanos certainly had a mixed first season in the Premier League. At times, the Greek international looked like a reliable and commanding presence and then in other matches, he looked nowhere near the level required.
His mistake against Fulham towards the back end of the season is the primary error that springs to mind as the centre-back failed to cut out a cross, instead placing it straight into the path of Andreas Periera who fired home.
Errors like that did happen far too often last term, but Mavropanos wasn’t alone in that regard as the likes of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd also looked miles off of the pace under David Moyes in the second half of last season.
With Zouma linked with a summer exit [The Times, 12 August] and Aguerd’s future up in the air, selling the Greek international as well may be an unnecessary risk for Julen Lopetegui and the Hammers days before the new Premier League campaign.
While new signings Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman are expected to be regular starters under the new Irons boss, some strength in depth is still required and Mavropanos may be best placed to provide that.
