West Ham United told Ivan Toney transfer may cost £40m after new Brentford exit update

West Ham United could sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney for an initial fee of £40million this summer, according to Tony Cascarino.

The Hammers and Tottenham Hotspur are understood to be the frontrunners to sign the England international after Brentford decided to slash his asking price to £50million because of a lack of interest [The Sun, 18 July].

Although talkSPORT pundit Cascarino believes the forward would be the perfect fit for the Irons, he doesn’t think either club be willing to pay the fee that Thomas Frank’s side are looking for.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Saturday (20 July, 8:54) he said: “I personally feel that Toney could fit both [West Ham and Spurs]. As long as you play a runner off him.

“When you’re buying a centre-forward to lead the line who is good at flick-ons, holding the ball up and bringing players into play, you’re looking for movement beyond.

“Both of those clubs have that, they have runners beyond. Bowen can do it for West Ham and obviously, Son Heung-min can do that and others. He can do a job for both teams, so I wouldn’t say one is a preference for me.

“I don’t think he’ll go for £50million, I’d go more down the route of £40million and there might be add-ons to get to £50million.”

Will West Ham United sign Ivan Toney from Brentford in the summer transfer window?

The Hammers are in the market for a new striker this summer and while Toney is certainly a candidate, he won’t be the only player being considered by Julen Lopetegui at this moment in time.

West Ham do have money to spend between now and the start of the Premier League season, but the Irons will be reluctant to pay over the odds for a forward who only has a year left on his contract with the Bees.

Perhaps Brentford’s asking price will continue to drop as the end of the transfer window edges closer and closer and the risk of losing the 28-year-old forward as a free agent becomes more realistic.

If the Irons could geta deal over the line for just £40million, it would be an absolute steal. But it wouldn’t be a surprise if more parties registered an interest in Toney for that price.

This will be one to watch in the coming weeks of the transfer window.
