West Ham United to press ahead with Georges Mikautadze transfer pursuit as Georgia exit Euro 2024

West Ham United might be in a position to resume their chase for Metz forward Georges Mikautadze following Georgia’s elimination from Euro 2024.

Mikautadze, who scored in every group match for Georgia before their eventual knockout by Spain in the round of 16 on Sunday, is the subject of considerable interest (Le 10 Sport, 29 June) from the Hammers – who are prioritising a striker as they reassemble their squad.

The 23-year-old has scored 37 goals in 59 Ligue 1 appearances since returning to Metz from Ajax, initially on loan before a permanent move for around £11m, and is keen on remaining in France for the time being [Le 10 Sport, 28 June].

While reports were denied that West Ham had reportedly already tabled an offer higher than Metz’s asking price of £17m, the club are certainly monitoring the player.

Mikautadze’s desire to remain at Metz for the foreseeable future could, however, complicate matters.

The club will doubtless continue their pursuit in a more direct manner now the forward is returning home from the Euros, having done his reputation absolutely no harm.

West Ham to continue Georges Mikautadze hunt

While West Ham have been enquiring all over the world for players with Tim Steidten leading Julen Lopetegui’s recruitment drive, so far just two players have been confirmed through the door.

Luis Guilherme and Wes Foderingham have been secured, with a clutch of further signings set to come, and it is clear that there will be further interest brewing in Mikautadze, who is of an ideal age profile and in a rich vein of goalscoring form.

The predominant question mark hanging over the Georgian is his ability to deliver against the very best opposition, which would be put to the test in the Premier League – his rating of just 5.7 [Sofascore] for his 79 minutes against Spain on Sunday was the lowest of any starting player in Willy Sagnol’s XI.

The Irons have their eggs in several baskets regarding their striker search, with Callum Wilson and Jorgen Strand Larsen on their shopping list.

Their pursuit of Mikautadze is not as advanced as first reported, but could escalate quickly following the end of his Euros campaign.

In other West Ham news, the club have released six players from one of their squads.
