West Ham United to make Jonathan David transfer decision as summer update emerges
West Ham United are now unlikely to pursue their interest in Lille striker Jonathan David this summer, according to The Guardian.
The outlet reported on its website on Friday (28 June) that while the Hammers are still believed to be in the market for a new number nine, it is understood David is unlikely to be the target that they pursue.
Reports had suggested that Julen Lopetegui’s side alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea were seriously interested in securing the Canadian’s signature having gathered information on him recently [Florian Plettenberg, 25 June].
Will West Ham United and Julen Lopetegui sign Jonathan David in summer transfer window?
West Ham supporters will be frustrated to hear that the Hammers aren’t pursuing their interest in David this summer as they have been crying out for a new number nine for a number of years now.
While Michail Antonio has always done an excellent and often thankless job of leading the line under David Moyes, he isn’t a consistent goal scorer and he will not be able to fire the Irons into the European places under Lopetegui.
Jarrod Bowen has shown that he can play as a number nine, but the England international has always looked better when deployed out wide and it also seems likely that Danny Ings could be sold if the right offer arrives this summer.

That means that a new centre-forward is a necessity and if the supporters know that, Lopetegui and Tim Steidten will as well. Now they just have to find a player that they can afford to bring in, who can make a difference at the top end of the field.
There are other options already on the agenda other than David, but the Irons cannot leave things too later otherwise they may well be short of options when the league season rolls around.
They cannot spend another campaign relying on Antonio to play upwards of 40 games in all competitions.
In other West Ham news, the Irons have made contact with Jaden Philogene over a potential summer switch from Hull City
