West Ham United to battle Borussia Dortmund for Edson Alvarez transfer

West Ham United are set to battle Brentford and Borussia Dortmund for the signature of Edson Alvarez this summer, according to BILD.

The Ajax midfielder, who scored three goals and contributed three assists last season, is set to cost any of these three sides around £30million in total.

The German publication shared that Dortmund are set to get their summer transfer business underway following the sale of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, and they want to sign the Mexican international “at all costs”.

However, the Hammers, alongside the Bees and several other Premier League clubs, are interested in signing the 25-year-old.

90min reported earlier this season (24 October) that West Ham had sent scouts to Holland to track the progress of Alvarez at Ajax.

Rice replacement

After David Sullivan confirmed that Declan Rice might have played his last game for the club in the Europa Conference League final, the Hammers will be in dire need of midfield reinforcements this summer.

Away from the England international, David Moyes is lacking options in the middle of the park, with an ageing Tomas Soucek, an undercooked Flynn Downes, and Lucas Paqueta his only other alternatives currently.

Alvarez looks to be the perfect style of player to replace Rice in the West Ham United ranks and is happy to play either as a central defensive midfielder or even at centre-back at times for Ajax.

Brentford are likely to be outbid by both Dortmund and the Hammers, who are likely to have huge war chests to spend in the summer transfer window.

After doing their due diligence and scouting the Mexican earlier in the season, now is the time for West Ham to decide whether Alvarez has what it takes to fill the huge void which is set to be left by Rice.
