West Ham United to announce Kalvin Phillips signing in next 24 hours after Newcastle United development, next potential arrival named

Kalvin Phillips will be announced as a West Ham player in the next 24 hours and Steven Bergwijn could also arrive before the February 1 deadline, the Press Association has reported (25 January).

The news agency said via Ireland Live that the Hammers had beaten off competition from both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace to land the 28-year-old Manchester City midfielder on loan until the end of the season.

PA added that the deal, which includes an option to make the move permanent, will be announced either later on Thursday or by Friday morning.

The report also states that West Ham are looking to offload Algeria winger Said Benrahma and that Ajax ace Bergwijn is still seen as a potential replacement.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano said via GiveMeSport (17 January) that the former Tottenham man was still being viewed as an option for a deadline-busting move.

Exciting times

In what has been an extremely drab transfer window in general in the Premier League, West Ham are breaking the mould with a flurry of late activity that is exciting supporters.

A strong first half of the Premier League season has seen West Ham battling once again for European football and the Hammers certainly seem intent on building on that and finishing as high as possible.

The arrival of Phillips is a brilliant piece of business, adding an England international to the ranks in January is certainly nothing to be sniffed at given the level of competition there was for his signature.

And most fans would agree reinforcement is needed in the forward areas to provide competition for the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen. Bergwijn didn’t have the best time of it at Spurs but he is an excellent talent and should be afforded more opportunities at the London Stadium.
