West Ham United: Steven Bergwijn agent speaks out after January transfer talks held
Steven Bergwijn’s agent Nathan van Kooperen has confirmed that West Ham were interested in his client during the January transfer window.
Van Kooperen speaking (via Fabrizio Romano, 11 February) shared that the Hammers along with clubs from Saudi Arabia were interested in signing Bergwijn during the winter window.
The Sun reported on 6 January that the Irons held preliminary talks with the representatives of Bergwijn to discuss a potential January transfer move to the London Stadium.
HITC reported on its website on Monday (8 January) that the Hammers were offered the chance to sign the Dutch speedster and that sources indicated the Dutch international has indicated his openness to returning to England following his previous stint with the Hammers’ London rivals Tottenham.
And according to his agent, Bergwijn still remains a vital part of the project at Ajax hence the decision to stay and is focused on featuring at Euro 2024 with Holland in June but remains open to the possibility of a possible exit in the summer window.
He stated: “It’s true about the interest from Saudi and West Ham last window.
“At the moment Stevie is very important for Ajax, he is captain so nothing to complain. We started a 2 years project with Ajax. What will happen in the summer we will see. He is focused on Ajax and to play the Euros”.
A transfer that West Ham desperately needed in January
It is quite baffling that the Hammers sold both Pablo Fornals and Sai Benrahma without securing a replacement on transfer deadline day.
And now Moyes is desperately short in his attacking department with Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen the only two players he can rely on with Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio out injured.
There’s also the reported friction with Danny Ings that is stopping him from featuring regularly too despite impressive cameos recently.
West Ham were linked with a plethora of options in the window to solve the issue and Bergwijn certainly emerged as one of the most attainable targets given the poor season that Ajax have endured this season.
The Dutch speedster certainly wants to be playing regular football ahead of Euro 2024 and it will have been difficult to grab an opportunity with Holland given the club’s situation.
A move to West Ham will have made ideal sense for all parties involved with Moyes desperately getting the attacking option he needed while Bergwijn will have been a sure bet for a regular berth.
However, no move materialised and it seems that the Dutchman and his agent always wanted to remain in Holland given his importance to the project at the Eredivisie giants.
A big loss for West Ham who now face the prospect of sinking deeper into stagnancy after their lack of attacking options right now.
In other West Ham news, a first-teamer reportedly received a big-money offer to leave London Stadium in January.
