West Ham United to complete Wes Foderingham deal to replace permanent Irons transfer exit
Nathan Trott’s expected West Ham departure is set to pave the way for the club to bring in Wes Foderingham, according to Adam Leventhal.
The Athletic journalist reported on the outlet’s website on 10 June that the former Sheffield United goalkeeper is “anticipated” to complete a move to the London Stadium once the sale of Trott to FC Copenhagen is sealed.
The 25-year-old Irons keeper is expected to bring in a fee of around £1million while his replacement will arrive on a transfer after leaving Bramall Lane at the end of his contract.
Following the release of third-choice keeper Joseph Anang at the expiry of his own deal new manager Julen Lopetegui is said to want an experienced reserve option to back up starter Alphonse Areola and deputy Lukasz Fabianski.
Nathan Trott transfer to spark one in one out West Ham signing
Talks with Foderingham, 33, have been in progress since his Blades exit became clear and it had been expected that one of Trott or Krisztian Hegyi would move on to make space for the veteran in the Hammers squad [Standard, 30 May].
Despite the former only just signing a two-year contract extension after the club triggered an option in his deal it is the Englishman who is set to move on.
Foderingham has plenty of experience as a first choice with Sheffield United and Rangers in both the English and Scottish top two devisions, albeit his 30 league starts last term saw him only win three times in the Premier League while conceding a massive 79 goals.
The Blades were one of only three sides who conceded more than David Moyes’ West Ham side, necessitating work on the defence this summer which could see a deal done for Udinese’s Nehuen Perez.
Lopetegui will no-doubt hope that he isn’t obliged to use Foderingham a great deal in his first season at the London Stadium given what it would mean in terms of fitness and form of the two men ahead of him.
But in such an emergency he is a known quantity that won’t be overawed by Premier League football, while helping satisfy the domestic quote rules.
