West Ham United reluctantly agree Craig Dawson move to Wolves with Jan Bednarek coming in

West Ham have “reluctantly agreed” to let Craig Dawson leave the London Stadium with just over 24 hours left of the summer transfer window, according to Alex Crook.

The talkSPORT journalist reported via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night (31 August) that Wolves are closing in on a deal to sign the 32-year-old former West Brom defender.

It is understood that Southampton’s Jan Bednarek is heading to the London Stadium to replace Wolves-bound Dawson.

Farewell, Dawson

It’s fair to say that Dawson became a cult hero in his time at West Ham.

Although he arrived at the London Stadium in 2020 off the back of relegations from the Premier League with West Brom and Watford, he has surpassed expectations and been one of the best centre-backs we’ve had in recent years.

Dawson was pivotal in West Ham qualifying for Europe in back-to-back seasons while he was also named in the Europa League team of the season last term along with Declan Rice.

Dawson will return to the West Midlands as an East London hero – although he won’t have made himself too popular in the part of the country he’s moving to with this deal.

West Ham

The ex-Rochdale defender has spent the most of his career with West Brom, who he played 225 times for before handing in a transfer request there and eventually leaving for Watford in 2019.

The defender is now joining their bitter rivals Wolves, whose fanbase might find it hard to adjust to have a former Baggies man in their squad.

Still, we wish Dawson all the best.

He’s been a firm fan favourite here over the last couple of years.

We just doubt it’ll be the same for him at Wolves.
