West Ham United refuse to give up on Mats Hummels transfer as new update shared

West Ham United are refusing to give up on signing centre-back Mats Hummels, according to GiveMeSport.

The news outlet reported on their website [3 September] that the Hammers are exploring the free agent market for another defender and have earmarked Hummels alongside Joel Matip and John Egan.

The report adds that West Ham have been eyeing a move for Hummels since early August.

West Ham United want to sign Mats Hummels

The Hammers were the most active Premier League club in the transfer market this summer with 10 new additions at the London Stadium.

Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo arrived as new centre-back options to challenge Konstantinos Mavropanos but, with only three senior options in that position, Julen Lopetegui is one or two injuries away from a crisis.

The departures of Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma, and Nayef Aguerd have left Lopetegui with limited options at the back and a move for Hummels would be a wise move to shore up his defence.

Now that the transfer window has passed, the Irons will need to navigate the free-agent market to strengthen their defensive options and there are none better than Hummels.

The 35-year-old became a household name in football playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, and he can still do a job in the Premier League despite entering the twilight years of his career.

His experience on the world’s biggest stage will elevate the West Ham defence and, even if he decides to call time on his illustrious career at the end of the season or the next, should he manage to help the side reach the European places this season it would be money well spent.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are set for more talks with Joel Matip.
