West Ham United receive ‘Significant’ cash windfall after Flynn Downes promotion with Southampton

West Ham United have received a “significant” cash windfall from Southampton after they were promoted back to the Premier League, according to Sean Whetstone.

The Saints earned a 1-0 win at Wembley over Leeds to return to the top-flight at the first time of asking, with Hammers loanee Flynn Downes playing a key role in their side.

Whetstone shared on his personal X account (26 May), that the promotion has triggered a clause in the loan deal between the clubs which has seen West Ham earn some extra cash while it was also revealed that there is no buy option – leaving his future at the mercy of new boss Julen Lopetegui.

Flynn Downes could offer plenty for West Ham next season

There are some big changes to come at the London Stadium this summer, with a new manager and plenty of transfer business expected.

One area of the pitch that will need to be addressed is the midfield, with Lucas Paqueta facing huge trouble for his betting charges and Kalvin Phillips returning to Manchester City from his loan deal.

That leaves James Ward-Prowse, Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez as the only options, and Downes could come in to provide competition and depth to the position.

However he struggled in the Premier League two seasons ago under Moyes, and if a big offer were to come in for the boyhood Irons fans then it will likely be considered.

Downes has admitted he’d be open to returning to St Mary’s, and if the club want cash to invest in other areas of the pitch then this should be an easy enough deal to complete.
