Leif Davis could make Ipswich Town exit as £20m West Ham United transfer mooted

Leif Davis will want to leave Ipswich Town in the summer if they don’t get promoted this season amid interest from West Ham in signing him, according to Carlton Palmer.

Speaking to Football League World on Thursday (29 February), the pundit said the 24-year-old is having a “fantastic season” with the Tractor Boys, but he believes they may be forced to sell him if they don’t secure promotion and he doesn’t sign a new contract at Portman Road.

He added that a £20million deal is being talked about, with the Hammers joined by Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest in their interest in the English left-back after tracking him throughout this season.

“Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and West Ham are three of the clubs said to be interested in Ipswich’s talented left-back Leif Davis,” said Palmer. “He is having a fantastic season with Ipswich at present, registering 14 assists in 31 league appearances following on from last season’s brilliance when the team got promotion.

“The problem Ipswich have is that his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025, but they do have an option to extend that by a further 12 months. The thing is now, he’s done really well for Ipswich Town and I’m sure a lot of things will come up for discussion depending on if Ipswich get promotion to the Premier League or not.

“Should Davis not sign a new contract, and Ipswich not get promoted, then it may be a situation where they have to sit down and be sensible and move him on. The offers and the amounts being talked about are around £20million, so it’s very interesting.

“West Ham have been monitoring him all season, so a lot may ride on the division he’s playing in next season. Should he not be playing in the Premier League [with Ipswich] next season, then I’m sure he will want to move on to pastures new.”

Could Leif Davis be the answer for West Ham?

It’s no secret that West Ham have been looking to sign a new left-back for some time after Aaron Cresswell has fallen out of favour at the London Stadium.

But Davis could be the man to fill that gap after he’s had an excellent season at Ipswich, having registered 14 assists in 31 appearances during this campaign.

It will depend on whether or not the Tractor Boys manage to secure promotion back to the Premier League as they currently sit level on points with second-placed Leeds United in the Championship.

West Ham
David Moyes has largely had a successful spell with West Ham

It isn’t a guarantee that the Englishman could come in and earn a starting spot immediately ahead of first-choice left-back Emerson, but the Hammers certainly need another option.

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops over the next few months as there are a few factors that need to happen before we can make our move to sign him this summer.
