West Ham United mooted to seal out of window transfer for ex Liverpool ace Joel Matip

West Ham can still sign former Liverpool defender Joel Matip on a free transfer with ExWHUemployee claiming it’s a realistic possibility.

The reliable Hammers news source reported on 31 August that the fact he was born in Germany and speaks German is something that Tim Steidten would like.

It’s understood that the 33-year-old centre-back would be open to being the fourth-choice for the Hammers.

Ex said: “Joel Matip who to me seems the most realistic possibility.

“The former Liverpool centre back and Cameroon international has played for Liverpool since 2016 making 150 appearances for the Anfield based team.

“He has suffered a few serious injuries which could put us off but he has just gone 33 so not as old as some of the other options and he also has a lot of Premier League experience too.

“He is German born and speaking which will work with Tim and he is also probably wanting to remain in the UK. There is a realistic chance that he would be happy to play as a forth choice centre back, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we were to make a move.”

Joel Matip could be a decent addition for West Ham

Signing Matip, a one-time Champions League winner, on a free transfer could be a strategic move for the Hammers, especially considering his attributes and experience.

The 33-year-old’s familiarity with the Premier League, having played for Liverpool since 2016, means he requires minimal adaptation time, which is crucial for maintaining team cohesion.

Despite recent injuries, Matip may have a couple of good years left, particularly in a role where he might not be the first choice but can provide depth and quality when called upon with new signings Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo ahead of him in the pecking order.

His willingness to accept a fourth-choice position indicates his understanding of squad dynamics and could offer valuable mentorship to younger defenders.

Moreover, his international experience with Cameroon adds a layer of tactical versatility.

This move not only addresses squad depth but also brings in a player who can contribute both on and off the pitch, making it a sensible acquisition for the Hammers.
