West Ham United medical for Emerson Palmieri to be done Monday – Fabrizio Romano

West Ham are on the brink of completing the deal to sign Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri for a total of £15million, Fabrizio Romano reports.

The clubs had agreed a deal previously but the move had become bogged down in negotiations on personal terms with the Italy international, which have now been sorted and a five-year contract is ready.

He will now commence the first part of his medical with the Hammers, which will reportedly be completed later on Monday (22 August).

Writing on his personal Twitter account Romano reported on Monday afternoon: “Emerson Palmieri to West Ham, here we go! Full agreement reached on both clubs and player side – been told that deal valid until 2027.

“Fee agreed with Chelsea for £13m fixed plus £2m in add-ons.

“Understand first part of medical tests will be completed today.”

Breakthrough

At last it seems like David Moyes is getting his left-back competition, having had it on his to do list since at least last season.

It’s a reasonably low fee for an international player from a Premier League rival but shows what the 28-year-old’s prospects were at Stamford Bridge with over £100million of players ahead of him at the full-back position.

Such has the awkwardness of this and other prospective transfers at the end of the window fans will be waiting to actually see Emerson unveiled in a West Ham shirt before they can be sure, but it can only be the most unexpected of turns that stops this one now.

West Ham

The start of the season has turned sour very quickly, and it is difficult to put a finger on exactly what the issue is, with key players performing well below their usual standards.

Rooted to the bottom of the league with no points from three games is certainly not what fans expected to see the Irons at this stage.

Thilo Kehrer was the last man necessarily rushed in and had a difficult introduction to life in the Premier League at the weekend, but the benefit with Emerson is that he has experience of the English top flight.

It is has been a disjointed preparation for the start of the season and now the manager is having to bring things together on the fly, so now he will hope that he can gather the pieces and get them gelling as soon as possible to start getting some points on the board.
