West Ham United make N’Golo Kante top target as Al-Ittihad response emerges after direct talks
Al-Ittihad have “no intention” of selling N’Golo Kanté after transfer talks with West Ham, Fabrizio Romano reports.
According to the Italian journalist via X on 19 July the Hammers have made the French midfielder a “top target” and have spoken to his club and his representatives in “direct talks”.
But the Saudi Pro League side are apparently uninterested in selling as they view the 33-year-old as a “key player and top professional”.
The Guardian had first reported negotiations over a £20million deal late on 18 July and indicated that there had been a willingness from both sides to reach an agreement.
West Ham to be disappointed in move for former Chelsea star?
It would certainly be surprising for Al-Ittihad to give up Kanté after just one season where he played his way back into contention for France and starred at Euro 2024.
They are reportedly paying him £86m per season [Guardian] so clearly felt he was worth a huge investment when picking him up last summer on a free transfer after his contract at Stamford Bridge expired.
On the other hand a £20m fee for a former free agent who is well into his 30s already after a single season would represent excellent business for plenty of clubs.
So it surely depends hugely on how long either side believe he has left in him performing at a high level and what sort of off-pitch significance Kanté holds for the Saudi PIF more widely.
Tim Steidten has embarked on a push to sign a player that Julen Lopetegui has wanted since his brief days in charge at Real Madrid and is said to be open to the switch [Guardian, 18 July] which suggests at least a slight belief that a deal is possible.
When fit and on form there are few better in central midfield throughout world football but his injury issues towards the end of his time at Chelsea might be a concern with a return to the Premier League.
In other West Ham news, the Irons hierarchy have changed their view on a top target after making a major transfer approach according to Sky Sports.
