West Ham United make new Egan-Riley transfer offer as contract signed

West Ham United have pursued Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley this summer transfer window.

The centre-back enjoyed an impressive season at Turf Moor, with Scott Parker’s team winning automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Graham Potter has wanted Egan-Riley at the Hammers as they look to bolster their backline after a rather disappointing campaign.

Jean Clair-Todibo’s spell at the London Stadium has been underwhelming, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Irons needing a replacement for him soon.

Egan-Riley to sign Olympique Marseille contract after new West Ham transfer offer

Egan-Riley will sign a four-year contract at Olympique Marseille after completing his medical, according to Fabrice Hawkins.

The RMC Sport journalist revealed on X (14 June) that the 22-year-old will join the Ligue 1 outfit, despite the Hammers making a late attempt to hijack the deal.

It’s been claimed that the East London club made a new offer in the final stretch to convince the centre-back to move to the London Stadium, but they failed in their attempts.

The Englishman is available on a free transfer with his current contract expiring at the end of June, and it looks like the French club have completed a bargain deal.

David Sullivan must sanction defensive transfers for Potter

Tim Steindten spent a significant sum at the London Stadium last summer, making several defensive reinforcements in Max Kilmam, Todibo and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

It’s safe to say that only the former Manchester United right-back has lived up to his expectations at the Hammers so far.

The Irons were disappointing defensively this season, conceding 62 goals in the Premier League as they finished 14th.

Potter must make amends at West Ham in the upcoming campaign, and if he fails to do so, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the English manager lose his job.

Several positions should be strengthened this summer, and centre-back is definitely one of the priorities.

Now that the Hammers have missed out on Egan-Riley, they must move on to their next target and ensure a deal can materialise.

While it’s disappointing to see the young English centre-back opt for Marseille, it gives them more time to look for better defenders.

David Sullivan must put his hands in his pockets and sign a quality new centre-back for the ex-Chelsea boss.
