West Ham United make loan enquiry for Matt Doherty, Tottenham response shared
West Ham have made a late enquiry for Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty on a season-long loan, according to a report by Jack Rosser of The Sun.
The Hammers are in the market for right-back and have already had a fresh approach for Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka rejected on deadline day [September 1, talkSPORT].
Now a loan move has been made for Republic of Ireland international Doherty, but according to Rosser a deal seems unlikely as it stands although a move for Jan Bednarek is now close.
“West Ham’s loan move for Jan Bednarek is close with Craig Dawson set to join Wolves,” he said on his personal Twitter account.
“West Ham also looking at trying to do a right-back today and have asked Tottenham about a loan for Matt Doherty, seems unlikely at the moment though.”
Odd
It seems pretty evident that the club are interested in bringing in a right-back late this summer, but the reason why is quite peculiar.
Vladimir Coufal and Ben Johnson are both very reliable and competent defenders and with the Czech defender only just turning 30 and Johnson still only 22, the squad looks quite set in that position.

ExWHUemployee has claimed that there have been some concerns over the form of Coufal recently and that could be the catalyst for bringing someone in, but it seems quite short-sighted.
Now a move for Doherty would allow a more natural option for a wing-back role, but he has hardly shone at Spurs since joining from Wolves but it’s unlikely to happen.
There isn’t much time to get anything done, so it will be interesting to see if David Moyes settles for his current squad or moves for someone else before the deadline.
