West Ham United make contact to sign Ryan Sessegnon on free transfer

West Ham United have made contact with former Tottenham ace Ryan Sessegnon about signing him on a free transfer, according to Jacob Steinberg.

Writing on their website (17 June), The Guardian journalist reports that the former Fulham man is a target for Julen Lopetegui as he looks for competition for Emerson Palmieri in the left-back position at the London Stadium.

The Hammers feel he could represent a “bargain” in the market but face competition from Fulham for his signature, while they also would need to be convinced that he is over his injury issues after missing large chunks of the last few years with fitness problems.

Ryan Sessegnon transfer a gamble for West Ham United

There’s no doubt that there is plenty of ability in Sessegnon, having won the Championship player of the year as a teenager before his move to Spurs.

But in recent years injuries have really affected him and have stopped his progression and development, but at 24-years-old he is hardly over the hill.

Capable of playing either as a left-back, left wing-back or even a left winger, there is a great versatility to his game and bringing him in on a free transfer would allow the club to address several areas of the squad on the cheap.

However, Sessegnon can only cover and compete for those positions in the squad if he is fit enough to play and recent evidence suggests he’s unavailable more often than he is available. Aaron Cresswell has also been re-signed, so it may not be a priority position.

It’s a gamble that the club should certainly weigh up as he is very talented, but they should probably move quickly before someone else makes the decision for them and snaps him up first.

In other West Ham news, the club have held talks with a World Cup winner over a potential free transfer.
