West Ham United make approach to sign Real Betis striker Borga Iglesias

West Ham have approached Real Betis with an enquiry about Spanish striker Borja Iglesias, according to Diario AS.

The Spanish news outlet claims that the 29-year-old’s value has risen dramatically due to him scoring 19 goals and winning the Copa Del Rey with Betis this season.

It is understood that if Betis want to sell Iglesias, they will have to agree a deal before 30 June and that they won’t be able to recoup all of the £23.7million they spent on him in August 2019.

Worth it?

West Ham simply cannot go through another transfer window without signing a new striker so David Moyes needs to put more time and effort into that than any other position.

Michail Antonio’s form waned in spells this season and that played a role in us missing out on the Europa League or even the Champions League spots in the Premier League.

Iglesias is a striker who’s played at the highest level in Spain for some time.

The former Celta Vigo, Espanyol and Real Zaragoza forward has endured varying degrees of success in his home nation but he’s really come to the fore this season with Betis.

Not only did he score 19 goals in his 51 appearances across all competitions, he also helped Betis reach the Europa League knockout stages before they were eventually beaten by winners Frankfurt.

He also scored in the Copa Del Rey final against Valencia, which Betis won on penalties.

While it’s been a great season for Iglesias, we don’t feel as though he’s been consistent enough in Spain to be a good signing for West Ham.

He scored just 10 goals in La Liga this term and none of those goals were against teams who finished in the top seven.

We could – and should – do better.
