West Ham United make approach for Samu Omorodion transfer, update on price drops

West Ham have made an approach to sign Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion this summer, according to Marca.

The Spanish newspaper reported on Wednesday (26 June, page 27) that, though Atletico expect the striker to be at the club next season, an offer with “many zeros” could change their mind, with Chelsea also interested.

Atletico will wait until the 2024 Paris Olympic squads have been announced before they decide on Omorodion’s future, with the La Liga club planning for the 2024/25 campaign.

According to Knees Up Mother Brown [6 June], Atletico value the player at around £34million, which could price the Hammers out of a deal.

Despite the summer transfer window only just opening, Julen Lopetegui’s transfer plan is clear, with several strikers being targeted ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Michail Antonio is the only real out-and-out striker option, with Danny Ings disappointing since his move from Aston Villa and Divin Mubama set to leave the club, having failed to break into the starting XI.

Omorodion’s transfer valuation has raised a few eyebrows this summer, however. While he did score eight goals for Deportivo Alaves on loan last season, he has yet to make his Atletico debut and earn his first cap for the Spain national team.

At just 20 years of age, the striker has plenty of potential, but it could be a risky move for the Hammers to splash out on an unproven striker when so many others are being linked to the London Stadium.

AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham and Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri have far more experience in Europe, with the former already showcasing his calibre in the Premier League with Chelsea.

While Omorodion would be an exciting addition, and one that makes sense through Lopetegui’s Spanish connections, multiple other options would be safer and more effective than the youngster.
