West Ham United have made an approach to sign Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez with talks underway, according to Versus.

The South American outlet reported that Gomez is all but certain to move on from the MLS club this summer, and will play in the Premier League from next season.

Julen Lopetegui is wasting no time in establishing transfer targets at the London Stadium, and 21-year-old Gomez could be a surprise addition to his rebuilt side.

Gomez excelled for Paraguay's under-23 side to help them qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but with the Copa America also coming up, he will only play in one of those two tournaments, likely delaying any possible transfer until July or August.

Would Diego Gomez be a good fit for West Ham United?

Midfield is one of the areas which, at face value, needs the least of Lopetegui's attention in the transfer market this summer, with the back four and centre-forward being the positions in which the Irons lack the most depth.

However, Lucas Paqueta's potential ban for a betting-related FA misconduct charge has thrown a huge curveball at the London Stadium, making the links to Gomez understandable.

Lucas Paqueta's possible FA ban could see West Ham United look for alternative options in midfield.

Paqueta had previously been linked with a move to Manchester City this summer, but if he is to be suspended by the FA, the club won't be able to sell him for a fee, and will still likely be paying his wages too.

Having taken a potential hit to their transfer budget, plucking a more obscure midfield target from the MLS could pay dividends for both the Hammers and Gomez, particularly given the 21-year-old has already tested himself both with and against some of the best players in the world.

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets are just some of the players Gomez has called team-mates for the past year at Inter Miami, and the experience of working with that calibre of individual should help him to quickly accommodate to life at the London Stadium.
