West Ham United made approach to sign Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson amid Emile Smith Rowe transfer update

West Ham United made an approach to sign Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson before turning their attentions to Emile Smith Rowe, according to The Guardian.

Writing on their website (19 January), the news outlet report that the Hammers had a loan attempt for Nelson rejected by the Gunners having now opened talks to sign his teammate this month.

But with a deal reportedly “very unlikely” for Smith Rowe, David Moyes and West Ham are being forced to look at alternative options to bolster their attack.

“Arsenal have resisted a previous attempt from West Ham to sign Reiss Nelson on loan,” they wrote.

Interesting

There had been some rumours of interest in Reiss Nelson in the summer before he signed a new long-term contract at The Emirates Stadium, which put an end to that.

The report from The Guardian isn’t clear whether the approach from West Ham was made this month or in previous transfer windows, but it seems unlikely it would have been in the summer considering he just signed that contract.

Bringing up approaches from years ago would make little sense too, so it would seem logical that this bid happened this month and Arsenal opted to turn it down just as they have done with Smith Rowe.

West Ham

West Ham clearly need to bring a forward in because of the lack of future that the likes of Danny Ings, Said Benrahma, Michail Antonio and Maxwel Cornet have at the club, but they can’t rush to do it and just bring anyone in.

The club must get it right and find themselves a new option to bolster their squad, but it seems unlikely to be Nelson or Smith Rowe.
