West Ham United look into Memphis Depay signing after crushing Niclas Füllkrug injury news
West Ham United were considering a move for Memphis Depay before the striker signed for Corinthians, according to Give Me Sport.
The news outlet reported online (10 September) that Depay was an option for the Hammers due to his pedigree in the game. However, the 30-year-old has now signed for Corinthians.
Depay was a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of last season. West Ham have refused to rule out signing a free agent.
It comes after Niclas Füllkrug sustained an Achilles injury while away on international duty with Germany. The extent of the striker’s injury will dictate whether Julen Lopetegui pushes to sign a free agent.
West Ham United miss out on Memphis Depay amid injury to Niclas Füllkrug
Depay could have proven to be a useful free transfer at the London Stadium.
He has experience playing for some of the world’s biggest football clubs, such as Barcelona and Manchester United, while he has featured consistently at the highest level.
As a result, his experience could have helped boost the profile of Lopetegui’s squad, while his presence might have been beneficial for some of the club’s younger players.
However, West Ham have missed out on the Dutchman’s signature. Therefore, if they do want to bring in cover for the injured Füllkrug, they will need to look elsewhere.
Time will tell just how serious the injury is, and Lopetegui could be forced to come up with some creative solutions in the coming weeks.

Hopefully, for the Hammers, the German forward won’t be out of action for too long. Füllkrug’s career is yet to really get going in the Premier League, and this latest injury setback won’t help.
