West Ham United: Kevin Nolan shares transfer admission on ‘brilliant’ Kalvin Phillips
Kevin Nolan believes Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips would be a “great addition” to the West Ham squad as they look to sign him in the January transfer window.
Speaking to BBC 5 Live Sport on Friday (19 January), the Hammers coach admitted that his club are “massive admirers” of the England international after he was “brilliant” during his time at Leeds United before making the switch to the Etihad Stadium.
He hopes the 28-year-old midfielder will decide to join the Irons instead of London rivals Crystal Palace if he does end up leaving the Premier League champions this month.
“Who isn’t a massive admirer of Kalvin Phillips?” asked Nolan. “England international, top player, he was brilliant at Leeds, one of the main reasons they stayed in the league as they did, one of the reasons Man City paid the money they did.
“We are massive admirers of Kalvin and he’d be a great one to add to our squad. I think he’d only be a great acquisition, so that’s all I can say and I’m hoping if he’s going to go anywhere from Man City, it would rather be us than Crystal Palace.”
Make it happen
It appears as though West Ham are firmly in the driving seat to secure a loan deal for Phillips in January so it’s just about persuading him the club are the right option to take his career forward.
There are details still to be resolved with Man City around fees and wage contributions, but there seems to be a willingness from both parties to ensure a deal can be done.
If the Hammers can get their hands on Phillips, then that would be a massive boost for David Moyes heading into the final few months of the campaign as another body is needed in midfield.
Although the Englishman hasn’t had the best of times with the Citizens, he will still have learned plenty from working under Pep Guardiola and he does possess undoubted quality.
It’s now down to us to sort out the finer details of the transfer to ensure Phillips is wearing claret and blue at the London Stadium once the beginning of February comes around.
